First up, these two disciplines are complementary.
It’s not about using either or for promoting your business. Marketing deals with reaching audiences, while communications focusses on what to say to those audiences. Marketing and communications work in tandem to create clear and defined messaging around a brand, product, individual, or company. The adage ‘you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink’ works here. Communications really ensures what you’re saying (whether as a video, content etc) is desirable to read. ‘You’ve got to target a thirsty horse with cool fresh water, so it wants to drink’.
